Bagpiping on Mothers Day

Mother's day is may 11 and what better way to show mom your love than serenading her with music from a full bagpipe band. The Ogden Legion Pipe Band, dressed in full highland regalia, in Calgary Alberta offers to visit local mothers for a personal piping performance.

The Mother's Day event is one of the main fundraisers for the decorated band, which was formed in 1972 as a Calgary area youth pipe band with members ages eight to 18 years. Sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Ogden Branch No. 154 in southeast Calgary, the Ogden Legion Pipe Band has become a top-caliber band that competes nationally and internationally. It has been the Grade IV provincial champions for the past five consecutive years and has also won major awards and honors in Canada and Scotland.

Proceeds from the Mother's Day Pipes and Roses event will help to send the Ogden Legion Pipe Band to Glasgow, Scotland, in August 2008 to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships.

Playing Bagpipes Are Good For Your Health

This article from the BBC is a few years old, but I think it's quite entertaining. Its title is "Bagpipes pose no health risks". Who would have thought playing the pipes could be anything but a healthy experience? Thanks to the BBC, piping has been declared a safe activity.

    From the article:

Fears for the health of bagpipe players have been dismissed as "a load of bunk" by the principal of the College of Piping.

Robert Wallace said the dangers of playing the pipes were no greater than those faced by other musicians.

Those zany Brits love to write stories to sell newspapers!
